My Divine Self Care (Team)

SELF CARE IS A DIVINE RESPONSIBILITY.

- DANIELLE LAPORTE

Listen. I'm not perfect (duh.) Some nights -- to my food therapist and mother's chagrin -- I eat trailmix for dinner. It's not something I'm proud of but hey, it totally happens. Like once a week. I don't claim to nail the self-care thing 24/7 but I do have a team of people who keep me feelin' pretty damn good.

Self-care gets thrown around as a selling point all the time: you're worth it, you need this, do more, do less, etc. Nobody likes to be sold to, myself included (big time.) But I do believe that SELF CARE, like Danielle LaPorte says, is a divine responsibility, and it's a responsibility that I've come to take more seriously over the past few years. If you know of, sell or promote a product or service that you'd like for me to try or review, please email me at lilliangraycharles@gmail.com.

*drum roll*

Here's my DREAM SELF CARE TEAM...

BODY MECHANICS // Massage & Chiropractic Care

  • 2233 Peachtree Rd NW #204, Atlanta, GA 30309 // 404.355.5499

Austin Cohen at Corrective Chiropractic took over my spinal care in 2014 after years of confusing joint and back pain. But that was just the start. After aligning me to my current state (and maintaining that structure), I started seeing Cohen's in-house massage therapist, Shalonda Barnett. I see Shalonda for a massage about every 6-8 weeks. If you are an active athlete and don't take a ton of time to stretch (or even if you do!), massages are a must. Corr Chiro has great rates for massages and you do not need to be a chiropractic patient to enjoy Shalonda's talents!

SKIN // Elaine Sterling Institute

  • 4840 Roswell Rd #201 Sandy Springs, GA 30342 // 404.256.5228

My friend and teaching buddy, Alexi, told me about an esthetician school in Sandy Springs last year and I've been hooked since my first appointment. The Elaine Sterling Institute has a long list of services ranging from mani/pedis to massages to waxing to facials and they are all crazy affordable (seriously, I couldn't go as frequently as I do if it weren't so inexpensive!) I slip in there for what I call "a professional face wash" roughly once a month. I can feel my skin start to collect nastiness when I go too long without a visit.

NOTE!  The students are definitely still learning but their instructors are close by. Depending on the service, you probably WILL be in a room with other people receiving treatments. Do not expect some glamorous upscale spa, it is a learning facility. For frequency and budget, I think it's worth it.

Right now I'm using the Elaine Sterling HA Serum and nightly renewal plus the Collagen Boost under eye cream. The eye cream is a damn game-changer.

Additionally: I use basic buy anywhere organic coconut oil over my entire body after showering!

NUTRITION THERAPY // sleep, digestion, anxiety, joint care

  • 2233 Peachtree Rd NW #204, Atlanta, GA 30309 // 404.355.5499

Jessica Elizondo, ya'll. This woman has changed my relationship with food. I can't even tell you what kind of anxiety I used to feel surrounding eating a meal. My stomach would get as big as a beach ball, I would cramp up, my skin would itch, face would break out, the ailments go on. I also (used to) experience periods throughout the year when I really do not sleep well (anxiety!)  And, as previously mentioned, my joints have been an issue for me for quite a while. Jessica had treated me for all of these issues and more with completely natural supplements. I no longer fear what I put into my body because I know what to avoid and how to take care of myself. She is also located inside of Corrective Chiropractic; you can book an appointment with her without committing to a chiropractic relationship.

MIND // Mental Wellness

In my opinion, this is the very most important aspect of Divine Self Care. I'm not shy when it comes to talking about my struggle with anxiety and depression. I've seen specialists, doctors, a handful of therapists, etc. I still strongly believe in medication if you need it and absolutely recommend therapy at any stage of life. But Mindfulness Based Stress Reductions courses teach you something that neither pills nor "sitting on the couch" can. The MBSR course I took with Dr. Stephanie Swann in the fall of 2016 taught me how to be in relationship with my thoughts. If you're like, "wait, wtf is Mindfulness?" click here.

    FACE // Cosmetics

    • 3440 Peachtree Rd, Atlanta, GA 30326 // laura_connors@s5a.com

I'm no beauty expert. But my care team consists of some smart ass cosmetic gurus. My number one girl in the whole world is Jennifer C. Neiman. She works in Film, TV, Print, Editorial, Bridal, & Runway and when I can get her to help my clients with personal make-up appointments in their homes, she does it!

Because Jen is always flying around the world (literally), I've been meeting up with Leah Connors (thanks to my sister!) who is at the Laura Mercier counter at SAKS 5th Ave at Phipps. She did my make up for my 29th birthday party and a. I loved it and b. I LOVE the products that she's introduced me to, including non-LM products.

NO, the products I use are not organic.

    MY DAILY ROUTINE:

Laura Mercier foundation primer -- other people noticed a difference in my skin (even on facetime) before I did! It makes anything I put on over it go on more evenly and not like my make up is chilling on top of my skin. It helps my skin drink my make-up. Basically.

NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint -- it doesn't make my face look dull but it does offer a serious matt base

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer -- for under my eyes... this stuff is FOR REAL!

Call me crazy but before I walk out the door, the lashes must go on. Or at least in my car. In traffic. At a stoplight. This is the mascara I've used for years and swear by: VOLUM' EXPRESS // COLOSSAL BIG SHOT BRUSH MASCARA

    TEETH // Smile Brilliant

Big shout out to SMILE BRILLIANT! I'll be using their trays soon and I'll update with my progress using their awesome custom whitening trays!

NAILS // Piedmont Nails & Spa

    • 1000 Piedmont Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30309 // 404.815.1872

I have to admit... I'm not super proud of the amount of money that I spend at my nail spot, Piedmont Nails & Spa. But I am obviously not willing to give it up (ha!) I've ventured around to quite a few places in Atlanta but as a West Midtown resident, Piedmont Nails has earned my business due to the quality of care I receive and the longevity of my mani/pedis. Whatever they do in terms of "grooming" my claws works; my cuticles look flawless for weeks. Oh, and they have a lovely assortment of designs and polishes, if you're into that sort of thing... like I am.

    HAIRS // Cut & Color

    • 674 Highland Ave NE Atlanta, GA 30312  // 404.681.3670

Salon Modello is my literally my home away from home. I've kept short hair since 2011 and it requires frequent trims! Thankfully, shortly after I chopped all of my locks off in my South Carolina hometown, I found Aaron Rohling in Atlanta. His scissor artistry is unparalleled to any I have ever seen and I truly recommend any type, face shape or texture of hair to go see Aaron for at least one cut. His team of colorists are absolutely spectacular.
